Is Dance an Art Form or Sport?

Shanna La Fleur said ¨it takes an athlete to dance but an artist to be a dancer.¨ This is commonly brought up subject and it tends to be very controversial. Is dance an art form or a sport? I believe that dance is an art form, but it does have components of sports. Anyone can dance, but not everyone can do it well. Dancers need to have strength, endurance, which are all things that people who play sports need to have as well. Sure, dance is just as demanding as sports but it’s an art form. Through dance you are able to tell a story without using any words. You can tell a story solely through your body language. People who play sports aren’t telling a story. While dancing, you need to change yourself into someone else, into a character. Sports players don’t have to do that.

The competition world of dance has been causing people to think twice about whether dance is an art or a sport. People who say if a dancer is competing that makes them sports players. However, yes competition teams are causing dancers to compete with other people. However, dancers if they are on competition teams or not, they have to compete everyday. They are competing with other dancers to get that lead role, but they are also competing with themselves to improve themselves and be the best they can be.

Dance is also a creative form. It allows people to express themselves. Sports players don’t get to be creative. They have a set of rules that they have to follow or they’ll get in trouble and put into a time out. Dance has no set rules. You don’t have to listen to any rules, the choreographer can have his or her dancers do whatever steps he or she would like to do. Sure in Ballet dancers usually want their feet turned out, but they don’t have to be. A choreographer can easily tell the dancers to have their feet turned in, and still have it be a Ballet piece.

George Balanchine once said ¨someone once said that dancers work just as hard as policemen, always alert, always tense. But I don’t agree with that because policemen don’t have to look beautiful at the same time.¨ Sports players are always alert, always tense, but they don’t have to look beautiful at the same time. They can look as ugly as they want. Dancers have to look beautiful and graceful while they perform. I once read ¨Male dancers can lift a 120 lb girl over their head and make it look effortless. But congrats on being able to throw a ball… that doesn’t even get caught sometimes.¨ I’ve been a dancer for the past 19 years and I believe that dance is an art form.

Are Dance Competitions a Good Idea?

Dance competition teams are becoming more and more popular in today’s day and age. This could be because of the hit TV show Dance Moms. However, is this a good thing to put young dancers through? I believe that competition teams are good in theory. It helps to give young dancers a sense of togetherness when competing in group routines. ¨There is no I in team¨, group routines will help to teach them this. It teaches them to work with each other and not against each other. It also allows young dancers to see what else is out there. It shows them different techniques and styles that they might not be used to. It allows them to meet new dancers and teachers. A little competition is always good. It shows young dancers what they have to work toward. It can show them they might be the best in their own studio, but there are other people out there who are better than them. This gives them something to work toward and can help them become a better dancer.

However, it is up to the parents and teachers to decide when a dancer is ready to compete. It is also up to them to make sure that he or she can handle the stress of it all. If a child is unable to handle it then he or she should stop competing. Dance Moms shows the unhealthy side to competitions. Unfortunately, a lot of young dancers want to join competition teams because of this show. They are seeing how famous the girls in that show are becoming and they want to become that famous as well. Young dancers want to go to Abby Lee Miller’s dance studio so they can get their 15 minutes of fame and meet all the girls who are becoming celebrities. This is unhealthy. This is the side that you should not want your child or student to be involved in. You want the competitions to be a friendly and positive environment instead of a negative one. Yes, there is such a thing as friendly competition. You want your student or child to get their 15 minutes of fame in a healthy way. One, that won’t do harm to them.

As long as it is done in a healthy and positive way, dance competitions can be a good thing.

Stretching is Very Beneficial to Dancers

At the start of every dance class the instructor will start class by stretching and making sure the dancers bodies are warm.  There are many benefits to stretching not just before you dance, but in general as well. Stretching will increase your flexibility, increase your technique, and keeps your muscles warm that way you don’t do anything that could do damage to your body.

Injuries are common in the world of dance. Almost every single dancer will hurt his or herself at least once in his or her career. Stretching before you dance is so important because it helps to prevent injuries. Stretching after you dance is also a good way to prevent injuries. You want to make sure your body is staying warm and ready to do whatever steps you may need to do. If your body isn’t warm then you are more likely to cause a serious injury. With that being said. Dancers need to make sure that every part of their body is being stretched. They should not just focus on one section of their bodies, you will never know when in class you are going to be using certain muscles, so you should always make sure to warm up every muscle you can think of. However, you can focus on certain areas longer than other areas. For example if you have previously injured a part of your body you might want to make sure that section stays extra warm in order to prevent re-injuring it.

Stretching is also important for other things as well. Stretching allows a dancer to become in tuned with his or her body. While stretching dancers can understand when something feels right within their body or when something feels wrong. It is important for dancers to understand their body so they are aware of just how far they can push their bodies without causing serious injuries.

There are many different types of stretches that dancers can do. They just need to make sure they are doing it in ways that are beneficial. While stretching you want it to hurt a little bit, but you don’t want it to be painful. If you are feeling pain then you should stop.

Stretching is very beneficial, it’ll increase flexibility, help alignment, and prevents injuries. Always make sure to stretch before and after you dance.

Ballet is the Core of all Other Styles of Dance

During the Italian Renaissance the dance style Ballet formed. Ballet since has become the most important form of dance. It is the core of all other styles of dance. Without Ballet, other forms of dance wouldn’t exist. In every form of dance, the basics of Ballet are there. Which is why it is so important that all children who are taking dance classes are exposed to it and have a basic understanding of it. Ballet is the building blocks of all other styles of dance. You wouldn’t teach a baby how to walk without having him or her crawl first. Therefore, dancers should know Ballet before they know other styles of dance. This isn’t to say students can’t take other styles of dance. However, they should be taking Ballet classes on top of those other classes. In almost all styles of dance people do turns. Where did turning come from? Ballet. Where can people learn to turn the best? Ballet class. There are also other steps that originated from Ballet that have been brought into other dance forms. So, where better to learn those steps than Ballet class. Ballet terminology is also the language for all the dance forms.

Ballet isn’t only the core for all dancers. Figure skaters, and a lot of sports players take ballet class as well. Ballet teaches them how to control their body. It gives them a better understanding of how their bodies move. It also helps to build their strength and flexibility, all of these things which are so important in their career. It also helps them to be more graceful, yes even sports players can be graceful. It helps to give them speed, balance, discipline and mental focus.

Ballet isn’t easy. It is a physically challenging art form, which can also take a lot out of you mentally. You can be in a lot of pain after one class, but it is rewarding. It teaches you everything you need to know about all other dance styles. Which is why it it’s so important that everyone who dances should take Ballet classes and have a basic understanding of this style.
